Dark Circle Under Eye? Check your nose..

If extra z's do not cure those dark circles under your eyes. One common cause is nasal congestion. When your nose gets congested, veins that usually drain from your eyes into your nose become widened and darker. Rinsing your sinuses with a saltwater solution (mix 1/4 teaspoon sea salt with 2 cups warm water) or over-the-counter saline spray can help relieve nasal congestion and your dark circles. Other methods to reduce nasal congestion are:

· Drink hot liquids, such as tea or hot chicken soup. It will help moisturize your mucous membranes, speeding up the movement of your cilia and thus washing mucus out of your sinuses more quickly.

· Apply warm compresses to your face, three times a day for five minutes. A small towel soaked in warm water, placed over your face below and between the eyes, will help increase the circulation in your sinuses, which will also help speed up the movement of your cilia.

· Clear your sinuses with an aromatherapy steam bath. To help open up congested nasal passages and sinuses, put a couple of drops of eucalyptus or menthol aromatherapy oil into a bowl of hot water, then breathe the vapors.

· Unclog your sinuses with the right foods. Horseradish, grated on top of a sandwich, or some Japanese wasabi mustard can also help open up congested sinuses.

· Elevate your head when sleeping.

· Dust your bedroom. Dust and dust mites can wreak havoc on your mucous membranes, especially when you're asleep and your cilia are at rest. Using a HEPA filter air purifier is also beneficial in keeping your air as free from allergens as possible.

Keep feeling good for health,

Karkidakam

When agriculture was the major occupation of Malayalis, they chose Karkidakam for their needed rest due to the unending rains. During Kumbham and Meenam they had to fight with diseases due to scorching heat, so in Karkidakam they revamped and prepared for the next year. It marks the Sun's transition to Karkadaka rashi from Mithuna rashi..

People normally have Karkkidaka Kanji during this month. The ingredients of Karkkidaka Kanji are boiled Navarra ari (rice), Jeerakam, Thiruthalli, Uzhinnigi, Bala, Attibala,Chathurjatham,Jathikka,Gathipathari,Danakam,Kalasam,Assalli,Satkuppa,Manjal ,Kakkankaya, etc.The ingredients are boiled using coconut milk or cow milk along with coconut jagarry and pinch of salt .

This is Aadi for Tamilians and Shravan Month for North Indians. The Sanskrit word Karkkidaka means cancer (in Malayalam Njandu).

The tradition of reciting Ramayanam started from 16th century, when Ezhuthachan wrote Adhyatma Ramayana in the form of Kilippatuu ( narrated by parrot ) in pure and simple Malayalam language which was easily accepted by common people of Kerala, to whom, the grammatically moulded Manipravalam style of literatures was not at all perceivable at that time.

This month - Ammuma would recite -'Balagan Ayodhayil, Araniyan Thanil Poku,Kishkindan Rajanodu, Sundaran Yudham Cheyathu......' and the whole Ramayana.

For people from the cultural capital of Kerala- Thrissur - this month is for Nalambala Darsanam. Nalambala Darsanam involves offering prayers at the Triprayar Sree Rama Temple, Irinjalakuda Koodalmanikyam Temple, Moozhikkulam Lakshmana Temple, and Payammal Shathrughna Temple, which are dedicated to Lord Rama, Bharatha, Lakshmana and Shathrughna respectively, on a single day.

The doors of heaven are open on Karkidaka Vaavu, so do Malayalee's believe. 'MANASSINTE ULLARAKALIL VEDANA CHALICHA SINDHOORAMAYEE VIDAPARNJU ................ ORUVARSHAM MUNPU...';ENIKU KANANAM...',Can I meet him on this day of this month? Will the doors really open? Karkidakam month is dedicated to dead ancestors when Shraddh ritual or pitru tharpan are offered to them.

Health! Health! Health! - Tips on Healthy Food

TOP FIVE FOODS TO LOWER YOUR CHOLESTEROL.

A few tweaks to your diet may be enough to lower your cholesterol to a healthy level and help you to stay off medications. Consider adding these cholesterol lowering foods to your diet:

· Oat meal and oat bran.

· Walnuts, almonds and other nuts

· Fish, especially mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon.

· Olive oil

· Foods fortified with plant sterols or stanols such as margarines, orange juice and yogurt drinks.

NOT ALL FATS ARE BAD FOR HEART.

While saturated and trans fats are roadblocks to a healthy heart, unsaturated fats are essential for good health. You just have to know the difference. “Good” fats include:

· Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Fatty fish like salmon, trout, or herring and flaxseed, canola oil, and walnuts all contain polyunsaturated fats that are vital for the body.

· Omega 6 Fatty Acids. Vegetable oils, soy nuts, and many types of seeds all contain healthy fats.

· Monounsaturated fats. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pecans, and butters made from these nuts, as well as avocadoes, are all great sources of “good” fat.

7 FOODS TO KEEP YOU YOUNG.

Put the fountain of youth in your grocery cart.

·

· Olive oil.

Four decades ago, researchers from the Seven Countries Study concluded that the monounsaturated fats in olive oil were largely responsible for the low rates of heart disease and cancer . Now we know that olive oil also contains polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that may help prevent age-related diseases.

· Yogurt.

yogurt is rich in calcium, which helps stave off osteoporosis and contains "good bacteria" that help maintain gut health and diminish the incidence of age-related intestinal illness.

· Fish.

Fish is an abundant source of omega-3 fats, which help prevent cholesterol buildup in arteries and protect against abnormal heart rhythms.

· Chocolate.

Dark chocolates are rich in flavanols that help preserve the healthy function of blood vessels. Maintaining youthful blood vessels lowers risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia.

· Nuts.

Nuts are rich sources of unsaturated fats, so they offer benefits similar to those associated with olive oil. They're also concentrated sources of vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals, including antioxidants.

· Wine.

Drinking alcohol in moderation protects against heart disease, diabetes and age-related memory loss. Any kind of alcoholic beverage seems to provide such benefits, but red wine has been the focus of much of the research. Red wine contains resveratrol, a compound that likely contributes to its benefits—and, according to animal studies, may activate genes that slow cellular aging.

· Blueberries.

Compounds in blueberries (and other berries) mitigate inflammation and oxidative damage, which are associated with age-related deficits in memory and motor function.
