Ponnu Onamthindey Ashamsakal……..
Ponnonamthindey Ashamsakal for 2008
Everybody has some thing especial about this festival in their minds. For me the message that this festival conveys is:
Keep your promise: Vamana asked for a simple gift — three paces of land —
When there was nothing else to give, to keep the promise Maveli, gave himself to Vaman. And therefore to remember that we keep three Thrikakaraappans on onam day.
Never be afraid: Maveli was not afraid of the Saints curse that all his wealth would be gone. And so we remember him along with Lord Vishnus Avathara of Vamanan.
There is so much of good in the worst of us and so much of bad in the best of us……That is why, when rest of the world, and we ourself worship, Vaman, as reincarnation of Vishnu, we also do remember Maveli every year.
Whatever be the reason, the Vamana avatar of Vishnu is remembered primarily due to the great King Mahabali. And in a rare instance an Asura or demon wins the heart of people over a God.
The story in detail can be found in the 8th canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam.
Perhaps the real truth lies in the Aryan – Dravidian conflict. Conflict is/was ineveitable.
Onam also is the harbringer of spring, and the beginning of the harvest festival. And as guests occupy a special place in our hearts, we welcome them with the Floural Carpet or the Pookalam.
Hope this ONAM brings in Good Fortune & Abounding Happiness for you !
We Wish You & Your family a Happy & Prosperous ONAM.
Ellavarkum Hridayam Niranja Onam Ashamsakal.......
